Fashion & Motherhood
With Kerryn Coughlin - Head of Design
Most mums know all too well that the juggle can be non-stop and exhausting. But at the same time, being a mum is the most rewarding role there is. Kerryn Coughlin, Head of Design at Yarra Trail, definitely gets it. As a mum of three daughters, she’s spent decades balancing her career in fashion while raising her girls, as toddlers through to grown ups. Kerryn has felt the full rollercoaster of emotions and shares her journey through both motherhood and fashion.
How did you juggle being a mum and your career given it’s so demanding?
My own mum played a vital role in my life as a working mum. I was fortunate to have my mum’s support, especially in those early years. Mum is one of my best friends, we are super close. Not only has she been supportive of my career, like moving into my home to look after the kids with my husband whilst I was away for work, she’s always been in my corner. In fact, she taught me how to sew on an old Elna sewing machine when I was ten years old. I ended up sewing all my own clothes which sparked my love of fashion catalyst to my dream of being a fashion designer.

To this day my mum still celebrates my career achievements. Recently I took her to our Williamstown boutique to show her the latest collection. As usual, mum was super excited to be there as it’s so nice to actually touch and feel the fabrics and try on some outfits.
“It warms my heart knowing that decades on mum is still there cheering me on. I hope I can be to my girls what she’s been to me.”

Has your sense of style changed since becoming a mum, and what are your go-to fashion tips for other busy mums?
Absolutely—it’s definitely become more casual. Comfort is key when you’re juggling so much, but that doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style. For me, fabric is everything. The way a garment feels against your skin can make or break your day, so I always look for pieces that are soft, breathable, and easy to wear. One of my go-tos is a gorgeous, cosy knit. You can just throw it on and instantly feel put together. Pair it with tailored wide-leg pants for a chic look, or keep it relaxed with joggers or your favourite jeans. It’s all about finding that balance between feeling good and looking great.
What is your idea of the perfect Mother’s Day outfit?
I love the Shadow Pants and the Shadow Blazer from our Coal Miner collection. I’m a bit of a sucker for a pinstripe. It has that slightly masculine feel we’re seeing on the catwalks at the moment and I love to be on trend. I wear it with a sneaker to make it more casual with the Tranquil Knit underneath which is a cotton cashmere blend, so it breathes and it’s easy to wear.
What’s on your wish list this Mother’s Day?
Having a moment to just pause, as life is just harry-hectic! Spoiling myself with a soak in the bath and a good magazine, some quality time with family around a shared meal. Ultimately though, it’s all about feeling the love. We go through so much as mothers—when your kids make you feel special, it’s a moment to cherish.
Spoil yourself and the incredible women in your life with a beautiful piece from our collection that will be worn and enjoyed time and again.
