The Importance of Empowerment
Representations of women in the media are complex and riddled with stereotypes.
Armed with self-love, diversity and courage, our three Trailblazers overcome discrimination with empowerment.
Each have their own stories, and how their experiences shape their media journey.
We talk with Amber about changing the culture of beauty, loving the skin you’re in and feeling empowered:
Being empowered means not taking a second for granted. I live my life to the fullest,
with vitality and drive. I embrace every single moment, with no regrets for anything I do, each and every day.
Beauty isn’t the produced perfection we see in magazines. It’s not accurate. It’s unfair and unequal representation.
It’s important for us to see that beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, colours and forms because we’re all beautiful and unique.
We chat with Ros about the power of honesty, self-belief and re-writing the rules:
Empowerment comes from showing up and challenging ourselves. It all starts with self-belief and
telling that negative voice within our heads to pipe down. There are so many
different ways to do life and it’s never too late to take a fresh approach because really,
what do we have to lose? I want to see change in the media’s portrayal of older women.
The value of older women needs to be represented in media. The loss of sexual power means that
we are often ridiculed and treated with disrespect. Australia is consumed by looks,
beauty and youth – but we have an aging population. Older women and men have a lot
of value in their wisdom and experience. And we need to make the most of that.
I’m inspired by women who lead with grace, empathy, strength and vulnerability.
We talk to Karla about telling stories that matter, onscreen diversity and being a force for change:
Empowerment to me is strength, self-belief and being confident. It’s also in the fact that, as a journalist and storyteller,
I am trusted and respected by others and that is a great source of empowerment for me.
Stay true to yourself, always. It’s very important to be yourself and not bow down to the pressures
of others to look or behave in a certain way. Take every opportunity you can to achieve whatever it is you want.
It’s been a long road for me to feel empowered. I don’t believe it’s something that comes overnight.
It’s something you build up to. It comes with maturity and experience.
